2014 / THE GEISHA AWAKENS/ VERONIKA SLÁMOVÁ, PETR PÍSAŘÍK / NG PRAGUE

Author and Curator: PhDr. Petra Polláková

Accompanying program: Lecture Department ofthe Oriental Art Department

The dragon isone of East Asian culture’s most central symbols. It is endowed with positive(yang) energy and creative power. This is why it became this exhibition’ssymbol. Throughout three different exhibition spaces in the Kinský Palace, works from contemporary Czech and East Asian artists living in the Czech Republicare presented. All of these artists have been inspired by East Asian art andcontemporary Japanese pop culture. Attention is given to the middle andyoungest artistic generation and pieces, meaning those that were created beforethe year 2000.

In the RidingStables of the Kinský Palace interventions performed by contemporary artists aspart of the permanent exhibition of Asian art on the first floor have beenplanned to tie into the exhibition. These interventions came about eitherthrough direct or tangential inspiration from old East Asian art from theOriental Art collection of the National Gallery in Prague.

Part of theexhibition also includes a group installation in the exhibition hall on thesecond floor of Kinský Palace. This installation takes a certain humorousapproach and is inspired by the concept of classical oriental salons, familiarto us through various Czech castles and palaces.
